Dr. Salvatore Palumbo, FACS, FAANS, is a board-certified neurosurgeon and spine specialist on Long Island, serving as Chief of the Department of Neurosurgery at Good Samaritan University Hospital (GSUH) in West Islip. He also serves as Director of Neurotrauma at GSUH and will mark 25 years of service at this award-winning teaching hospital in 2027. He also serves as Chief of Neurosurgery at St. Joseph's Hospital in Bethpage.
Throughout his career, Dr. Palumbo has remained focused on treating patients with complex neurological and spinal conditions, and he has built a reputation for clinical expertise that is respected both on Long Island and nationally.
Salvatore Palumbo, MD, approaches each patient's care with a patient-first philosophy, combining advanced surgical techniques with treatment plans tailored to each individual's needs. He takes time to thoroughly assess each case, aiming to identify the most effective and least invasive options available. His focus is on providing pain relief while also restoring function, mobility, and quality of life for each patient he treats.
Palumbo has helped thousands of patients across Long Island address conditions that affect the spine, neck, brain, and peripheral nerves. He performs a wide variety of intracranial and complex spinal surgeries and holds specialized expertise in spinal reconstruction for both degenerative and traumatic spinal disorders.
He is also experienced in the treatment of intracranial tumors and other forms of neuropathology, with a surgical scope that spans from minimally invasive microdiscectomies to multi-level instrumental spinal restabilization procedures.
Conditions that Dr. Salvatore regularly diagnoses and treats include back and leg pain, arm and neck pain, sciatica, herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, compression fractures, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), spinal and brain tumors, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Dr. Salvatore Palumbo has earned a range of professional honors throughout his career, including recognition as a Top Doctor in America and on Long Island. While practicing in Pennsylvania, he received the Outstanding Physicians Award, along with numerous other professional recognitions that reflect his standing in the field.
Although these honors are a meaningful reflection of his work, Salvatore has always considered his patients' well-being and recovery the truest measure of his success. One patient earlier this year referred to him as a "hero." Another shared these words about the care his father received: "Dr. Palumbo took care of my father when he was in a bike accident. My dad is a surgeon, and Dr. Palumbo was his first and only call. He's the best!!! I would recommend him to anyone who is suffering from any pain!
A patient who had lived with persistent pain for many years described his treatment experience in the following words: "Where do I start? I've been dealing with multiple herniated discs in my neck for over 20 years with consistent pain. I've been living off of epidural injections and nerve blocks for most of those years. After 2 unsuccessful back fusions, I swore I would never get my neck fused. It got to a point after 3 epidural shots in the past year with unlivable pain and compressed nerves that I got it done. Thank god I didn't use my orthopedic surgeon and was recommended to Dr. Palumbo! I'm 2 months out of surgery and pain-free in my neck! Every visit was never a rush; he took the time to speak with you about any concerns and had a great bedside manner before and after surgery."
Dr. Palumbo was among the founding members of Long Island Brain and Spine and the Interventional Pain Management Group. Long Island Brain and Spine is a multidisciplinary center that unites board-certified neurosurgeons and interventional pain management physicians to provide coordinated, high-quality care for the brain and spine. Its services span a broad range, from neck and lower back pain to brain and pituitary tumors, aneurysms, and stroke management.
Through this collaborative model, care is coordinated smoothly across specialties, offering patients a more unified experience and access to a comprehensive set of treatment options all within a single, integrated practice.
Palumbo is a Fellow of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons, a credential that reflects his education, training, ethical standards, and professional competence in surgery. He has also been appointed a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and his memberships include the North American Spine Society and the New York State and County Medical Societies.
Salvatore Palumbo, MD, completed his undergraduate degree at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He earned his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia and completed his General Surgery Internship and Neurosurgery Residency at the University of Rochester-Strong Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Salvatore Palumbo's dedication to helping others goes well beyond his day-to-day clinical practice. He has donated to Catholic Health Long Island. This organization serves hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders each year by providing care from the beginning of life through the end of life, and by supporting individuals in spending their final years with comfort, grace, and dignity. He also regularly donates to Make-A-Wish, an organization that grants life-changing wishes to children living with critical illnesses.
